An out of the box, first of its kind in tamil cinema I should say, that kept me guessing initially whether am I watching a tamil flim :P A gangster flick in tamil sans songs sans even an item number, was depicted brilliantly by the debutant director Thiagarajan Kumaraja sketching out the sheer realistic raw life of thugs in urban. Movie’s plot had strong elements of western influence which was hitting you pretty straight. I reckon the best aspect behind this flick being the right kinda narrative style adopted by the director, which was so apt for the script’s in depth harshness. Movie kicks off erotically wherein aged gang leader Jackie sheriff who plays as SingaPerumal sexually harasses his wife-like Yasmin, whom he had garbbed up somewhere ditching her for a cine acting chance.
Then the film gets heated on with the clash of words over a drug deal between Jackie sheriff and Sambath who has been roped in as Pasupathy, leading to a tensed up rift with in the gang. Getting to know that Singaperumal wants to get rid off him, pasupathy tries to evade, but he was spotted on by both Jackies’ & drug deal’s other sider – Gajandran’s gang, whose character was pictured pretty rough and raw amidst mobleaders. Infact there is specific scene where Pasupathy tries to explain thug Gaja with a interesting little story, revealing out director's heavy influence over hollywood director Guy ritchie. The point at which Pasupathy gets to know about Preumal’s order to his fellow mobbers to kill him, was absolutely spot on with the perfect twist. Scenario further worsens Pasupathy’s existence with his wife being kidnapped and him being targeted from both the ends.
Later the drug was caught up by a poor old drunkard and his little kid kodukkapuli who was portrayed so clever and quick witted, played by master vasanth. The scene in which the kid and dad consoles themselves outta their cock’s loss was heart touching and the movie really had the senti touch. Perumal later gets hold of little kid’s father for the drugs, torturing him for hours. Specifically director uses a reddish frame-tone over these scenes giving us a horrific mood while throwing light on the character’s vigor. Storyline moves about with how Pasupathy unties all his knots of problems and gets his wife & kid’s father back. In the midst of all these narrator creepingly pierces the storyline at times with romantic interludes between Ravi Krishna and Yasmin, which could have been rendered without slowing down the pace of the plot. But alas a package of sheer bloody violence and a surprise element awaits in the story’s kitty.
Kudos to the director for a gripping screenplay & aptly crafted dialogues, which was splashed out with typical gangster’s erotic and obscene slang every now and then. Director was really bold enough to attend such a plot and portray in tamil cine scenario for a debut. Editors and the background scorer Yuvan has to be given the due credit for mixing up the dramatic rough violence of ultra slow motion camera frames with splendid strings, which did beautifully embossed the cinematographer’s captures added up with splashing bloodshed all around via efx, giving us a visual treat of raw realistic thug stunts. By the way the movie is strictly for adults & a must watch for guys who aren’t dark film haters!
I’ll give a 4 outta 5 for this one, without a doubt.
Check out Yuvan's classy score taking you through the movie amazingly --
